Who is it for?
- students in their final years of secondary school, or recent school leavers, who want to study for a bachelor’s degree in the UK,
- students who have started university in Turkey and are thinking of continuing their studies in the UK,
- parents planning for their child to go to university in the UK.

Undergraduate study in the UK
In most of the UK, a standard bachelor’s degree takes 3 years of full-time study. In Scotland, a standard bachelor’s degree is 4 years long.
Because you apply for a specific course, choosing the subject is the most important decision in the process. We make it together, looking at the student’s interests, grades and goals.
The foundation year: a common route for Turkish students
An International Foundation Year is a programme, typically one year long, that prepares international students who do not meet a university’s academic entry requirements for a bachelor’s degree. Some universities offer it as a stand-alone course, others as part of an integrated degree.
The key point for Turkish students is that the Turkish high school diploma (Lise Diploması) on its own is not accepted for direct entry everywhere. According to the universities’ own published information:
- the University of Edinburgh does not currently accept the Turkish high school diploma for direct entry and points students to its own foundation programme;
- the University of Manchester says most students with the Turkish Lise Diploması (MEB) will need to take a foundation year, and considers students from approved schools for direct entry;
- the University of Warwick says it considers students studying at approved schools for direct entry.
So whether you can enter directly or need a foundation year depends on the university, the course, your school and your grades. We look at your transcript and work out with you which route is open at which universities.
Note that a “foundation degree” is something different: a separate higher education qualification equivalent to the first two years of an honours degree. It should not be confused with a foundation year, which prepares you for a degree.
Entry requirements
- Academic: your high school diploma and grades. Many universities publish their own requirements and grade equivalences for applicants from Turkey.
- English: universities mostly state their English requirement as an IELTS Academic score. For example, the University of Leeds asks for 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in each component as its standard undergraduate requirement, while at the University of Warwick it ranges from 6.0 to 7.0 depending on the course. The University of Manchester usually asks for the equivalent of 6.0–7.0 for degrees and 5.5 for foundation courses.
- Personal statement: a piece of up to 4,000 characters in the UCAS application, answering three questions.
- Reference: every UCAS application needs a reference from someone who is not a family member or friend; if you apply through your school, the school can provide it.
Applying through UCAS
Undergraduate applications in the UK are made through UCAS. One application lets you make up to five choices, which can be the same or different courses. Since 2026 entry, the personal statement is made up of three separate questions instead of one longer piece of text:
- Why do you want to study this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications and studies helped you prepare for it?
- What else have you done to prepare, outside education?
Universities may make a conditional offer (depending on you achieving certain grades or an English score) or an unconditional one. You can accept one offer as your firm choice and one as your insurance choice.
Key dates for 2027 entry
- 1 September 2026: completed applications can be sent to UCAS.
- 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time: deadline for Oxford and Cambridge, and for most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine or science.
- 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time: equal consideration deadline for most other courses.
- 30 June 2027: applications received after this date go automatically into Clearing.
UCAS publishes new dates every year. Application methods and dates for foundation programmes can differ from university to university, and we check the dates for the programme you choose with you.

Popular places to study
Cities such as London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Oxford and Cambridge are home to many universities, but there are strong universities in many UK cities. The right choice depends on your subject, your budget and the kind of city you want to live in.
Application timeline
- 18 to 24 months before the start (Year 11 in a Turkish high school): researching subjects and universities, and deciding between direct entry and a foundation year.
- 12 to 15 months before the start: preparing for an English test, writing the personal statement and asking for a reference.
- September to January: sending the UCAS application (by mid-October for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine).
- Winter and spring: universities reply, and you respond to your offers.
- Summer: exam results, meeting any conditions, and getting ready to travel.

Frequently asked questions
Can I start a degree directly with a Turkish high school diploma?
It depends on the university. Some do not accept the Turkish high school diploma for direct entry and ask for a foundation year; others consider students from approved schools for direct entry. We work out your options together based on your school and grades.
How long is a foundation year?
International foundation programmes are typically one year long. Successful completion opens a route to a degree at that university or elsewhere, depending on the programme’s conditions.
How many universities can I apply to?
You can make up to five choices on one UCAS application. For medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine and science, you can apply to a maximum of four courses in any one of those subjects.
What IELTS score do I need?
It depends on the university and course. For undergraduate degrees the overall IELTS Academic score asked for is mostly between 6.0 and 7.0, with a minimum for each component (listening, reading, writing and speaking). Foundation programmes may ask for less.
When should we start?
Ideally 18 to 24 months before the course starts. UCAS applications can be sent from September of the year before the course begins, and the deadline for most courses is in January.
What if I do not get an offer?
UCAS Clearing is how universities fill the places they still have; you can use it if you have no offers or did not meet your conditions. We can also look at other routes together, such as a foundation programme.
